Appearance – 8/10

Classy, stylish, fresh, no, I’m not talking about myself since I got a new haircut and stopped eating Jammy Dodgers. I’m talking about the New Balance Furon V7s. The simplistic black colourway is definitely coming back into style, with the years of boots being made as bright and colourful as possible somewhat dying out. These look really sharp, with the black colour only being interrupted by the fresh, gold trim of the New Balance branding.

If we had one qualm, and it is a minor one, it’s that the boot is a little bit strangely shaped. It reminded us of the iconic Puma One 5.1 football boots, which have a slightly bulky look to them. For instance, if we look at the Furons from a bird’s eye view, we see see the wide shape of the outside of the boot. It’s nothing bad, though, and it actually makes these boots ideal for football players with wider feet. Just in terms of looks, it marks them down half a point.

I know we said we only had one qualm, but in truth we have another with the look of these boots. It’s a small one though. We hated the ‘fake’ laces sketched across the upper where traditionally placed laces would be. We really like the off-set lace design – which we will talk about more later on – but why then add those fake lace outline next to it? Hideous and in contention for worst-looking part of a boot we’ve ever seen! Does it make a difference to how these perform on the pitch? Absolutely not, so perhaps we’re being harsh. But still, just why?

Hypoknit lightweight mesh upper

The Hypoknit mesh upper is a beautiful foundation for the Furon V7s. We really liked the mesh, as its soft surface was clear to see (and feel). This gave us enhanced control when bringing the ball down, as the soft and lightweight upper cushioned the ball. The lightweight feel also helped to optimise speed while running and we felt we weren’t getting bogged down by weight. For this reason, the Furon V7s are ideal for wingers or speed-based players.

Despite its light feel, these boots were surprisingly still rather stable and robust. Some boots designed for speed focus so much on being light that they provide no protection or traction from beneath, but it wasn’t the case for these New Balance models.

TPU Outsole

The sturdiness of these boots is largely down to the TPU outsole. What is TPU I hear you ask? Great question reader, we love that you’re engaged. TPU stands for Thermoplastic Urethane, the bigger, better older brother of Poly Urethane, and relates to the outsole of the boot. In other words, it’s the chassis of the boot which the bottom of the foot sits upon and from which the upper of the boot is attached to.

Anyway, enough of the science lesson. The TPU outsole provides enhanced traction from underneath the foot, as well as a lot of stability. This is crucial for any boot, and yet some still lack this stable underside. It’s crucial because while playing, you’re going to be turning a lot and using the support from your boots to power off into sprints. Add in the extra factor of dodgy pitches, and having a boot that can effectively support your feet is of paramount importance.

That’s what these Furon V7s do very well, especially for such a lightweight boot. So, no more looking at the turf when you fluff your next shot – with these boots you no longer have any excuses!

Chevron Stud Configuration

Stud configuration sounds like a boring topic for even the keenest of football-boot lovers. That it might be, but it’s also a very crucial aspect of any boot. The stud configuration is essentially the formation of the studs on the undersole. While most boots go for the standard four at the front and two at the heel, varying models have different number of studs and studs that are placed in different places.

The Furons have a chevron stud configuration that is optimised to enhance stability and balance. This is particularly key when striking the ball – where players put their entire weight on their standing foot. So, while there’s nothing ‘sexy’ about stud configurations, getting it wrong leads to slipping and not being able to play the way you want. No worries on this front for the Furons, though!

Off-set Lacing

We mentioned the off-set lacing earlier, and while we hated the fake lace imprint on top of the boots, the off-set lacing itself was a good addition. What’s the point of it? Well, it might seem like it’s similar to those supercars that have doors opening upwards – flamboyant for no logical reason – but there is logic to this move in this case.

The Furon’s off-set laces provide a larger, uninterrupted strike zone. This allows for more contact with the ball when striking, but also not negative impact from the laces. With conventional football boots, the laces are centred at the top of the boots, which sometimes impacts the strike zone of the foot. Here, that isn’t a factor, so you get a cleaner strike away every time.

This is another reason why we think these boots are perfect for wingers and strikers.

Knit Collar

The final feature of the New Balance Furon V7 football boots is the knit collar. We’re a big fan of knit ankle collars. In general, they enhance comfort, give a lock-in effect and all round give a better fit to the boot. Boots like the Nike Hypervenoms are famed for their elaborate, high ankle collars, but we actually prefer the collar on these.

It’s is evidently much shorter. This makes it much easier to actually get the boots on, but still brings the comfort and lock-in feel of any other collar. The collar is made from a lightweight material which allows the foot to breathe while not hindering any movement.

All-in-all, it’s a great addition to a solid boot model.

Comfort – 8/10

Comfort is the name of the game with these Furon V7s. The Hypoknit upper is soft, super soft. Like a bald man’s freshly shaved head. Combine that with the concise, yet dynamic ankle collar and you get a boot that feels like it’s metaphorically hugging your foot.

The soleplate we mentioned previously is also a big factor that enhances the boot’s comfort. In providing a stable foundation to the under part of the boots, you won’t get slippage or instability. Instead, you’ll feel the benefit of a properly supported boot which gives your feet the stability and confidence to play the way you want, regardless of how bad the pitch is. So again, NO BLAMING THE PITCH for missing sitters. It’s not the grass’ fault your sh1*!

Sorry for that outburst. Our point remains the same though. If you want comfort, reliability and assurance from a boot, the New Balance Furons are the way to go.

Value for money 7/10

These boots are very good value for money. While they don’t quite hit the extravagant price range of the top-of-the-range boots, they are far from the lower end, basic ‘does a job’ boots as well.

They come with several features that noticeably make a difference on the pitch. From the ankle collar and soleplate, to the Hypoknit upper and off-set lacing, the Furons have clearly had thought behind them during their creation process.

Overall, the Furon V7s are great value for money and a very solid choice of boots to buy.

Pro Advocates of the New Balance Furon V7s – 7/10

New Balance doesn’t have a long, illustrious list of players on their books who wear their boots, but the few they do have are pretty decent to say the least.

Arsenal’s golden boy Saka is on the books with New Balance, and more than that is their poster boy as well. In 2022, New Balance released two personalised models of the V7’s younger brother, the Furon V6s, in homage to Saka and his impressive career to date.

Sadio Mane may not be tearing up defences for Liverpool in the Premier League anymore, but despite his Saudi move, he should still be remembered as one of the greatest forwards to grace the English shores. New Balance also rewarded his footballing exploits with personalised versions of the Furon V6s.

Eze has far less of a profile than the previous two mentioned, but his talent is still clear to see. It’s likely that a big-money move isn’t too far off for the youngster, and in 2023 New Balance released a signature pair of Furon V7s for the Palace winger. Dubbed the ‘Starraiser’ editions, these boots are very attractive on the eye – featuring a stratospheric, cosmos design that is truly unique.

Amazon User Reviews of the New Balance V7s – 4.3 (44 reviews)

Overall, the general public liked these boots as much as we did!

Positive reviews were especially focused around the wide berth of the boots, echoing what we said about the Furon V7s being perfect for wide-feet players. Other reviews commented on the comfort and durability of the boots.

The only negatives seemed to be individual cases, where either a box was damaged in shipping or, for one specific review, a case of the boots causing pain to one player. However, these were literally two of 44 reviews. The damaged box review included the fact that the boots themselves were still brand new and undamaged. The review of the boots causing pain sounded like a one-off case of either buying the incorrect size, or not properly wearing the boots in to make them more comfortable.

New Balance Furon V7s Final Verdict – Are They Worth it?

It’s a categoric YES from us, these New Balance Furon V7 football boots are definitely worth buying.

We loved how seemingly simple these boots were. There are no real outlandish features that makes these boots visibly stand out (perhaps excluding the off-set laces), but the features they do have do a heck of a job. It’s like Kante on the pitch – nothing flashy, nothing too easy on the eye but so, so effective and top quality.

If we go through our checklist of what we want from a pair of boots, it seems the V7s have them all. Comfort – yes. Stability – yes. Robustness – yes. Sturdy – yes. Lightweight – yes. Optimised striking zone – yes. There is so much to like and yet, the price simply does not reflect how good these boots are. Like we said earlier, the price range is not top tier but the boots’ performance is.

I personally really do like these boots. It’s rare that I see a boot that is robust but still lightweight. That alone is unique, but add in all the other benefits and features mentioned, and you get a really thorough and optimised football boot to lace your feet with on the pitch.
