When should I change my football boots?

Nothing lasts forever, unless you’re Gareth Southgate and have the England managerial position. Football boots are no exception. Some players keep the same old worn out pair of football boots for years. Whereas, some footballers prefer to buy new boots every month of the year. But when’s the optimum time to change your footwear and how often should you replace your football boots throughout the season?

How often football boots should be replaced

Sunday League – Change your football boots each season or two

Pitches for grassroots football are notoriously horrendous. So it’s doubtful that you’ll even need to think about moulds or something any lighter than metal studs on your feet. It’s likely that you’ll play just one time each week on grass, and then potentially have a training session midweek.

Therefore, one pair of metal-studded boots suitable for grass, or predominantly mud, should be sufficient to last the full season. Depending on comfort, and if money is a bit tight, you could make that one pair stretch two seasons. Additionally, you’ll want a pair of ‘astroturfs’ which should last for the same duration.

Amateur League – Change your football boots each season

By amateurs, here we mean players playing for well-established teams with standard grounds, above Sunday league level yet still not getting paid (i.e. teams who enter the F.A Vase). Obviously, you’ll be playing a decent standard of football, and frequently; often two matches a week as well as training. For this standard, we recommend replacing your metal-studded football boots at least once a year, as well as standard astroturfs.

You’re still quite far from the Premier League, but let’s be honest you’re drawing in a pretty handsome wage still. You can afford to replace your football boots regularly. Premier League pro –Change your football boots whenever the hell you want

Not that you’d need advice from the likes of us novices, but if you’ve reached the Prem and are reading this, then it’s more than likely you have an agent. Therefore, a quick call to them or even directly to your sponsor, and you can have a shiny new pair of Nikes quicker than you could say ‘Just Do It’.

Consequently, you should replace your football boots as often as you want/can!
