Interesting ** scratches non-existent beard slowly.** Very interesting. It’s safe to say we learned a lot from what this weekend’s football had to offer. It may not have carried as much drama as usual, but as the game weeks go by, more and more pieces of the puzzle of how this season is going to turn out are revealed.
Our rundown of all the action for game week 3
Wolves maybe are the real deal
So much hype had come with Wolves’ return to the Premier League before the season began. Their squad is clearly too good for England’s second division, with many recent acquisitions more familiar to the Champions League rather than the Championship.
Many still feared that the jump up to the top division would see them struggle. The results against Everton and Leicester were perhaps a wake-up call that this is the next level up. Their display against City though was excellent. Not only did Wolves maintain a solid structure and defended as a unit, but they also had chances of their own.
Many other teams have succumbed to similar amounts of pressure City put on them when Laporte equalised with 20 minutes remaining. Fair play to them. Maybe Wolves can fulfill their potential and finish in the top half of the league this season… or maybe do even better.
Mourinho hanging by a thread
If he were a cat, he’d be down to his last few lives. Jose Mourinho’s Man United fell to another humbling defeat on Monday, this time at home to Tottenham Hotspur. Without trying to sound like a broken record by repeating last ourselves from last week’s article, the meltdown is imminent.
Fair play to the Portuguese manager. Rather than running off down the tunnel, he faced his demons head-on, and they… applauded? That’s right they clapped him for a good 30 seconds. It was a magical, slightly-awkward and bit surreal moment. But that was nothing in comparison to his post-match press conference. He stormed out of it in a fit of rage.
Okay, it wasn’t exactly rage. He was more pleading for the media to ‘respect’ him for winning three Premier League titles. I once got 210,000 on Doodle Jump Jose, but it doesn’t mean if I don’t do well at my job I won’t get fired.
Burnley away next week is another tricky test for United. We are impartial here at FBG but can’t help but be entertained by these frequent meltdowns. Therefore, more United losses would be welcome, but too many may lead to Mourinho sacked and thus an end to the meltdowns. So there is a fine balance.
Richarlison brought back down to earth
It has been a strange week for the Brazilian youngster. After his move from Watford to Everton for a hefty £50m, many were questioning his value. However, he silenced those doubters with a blistering start to the season that saw him score three goals in the opening two matches. Furthermore, he has just earned his first call-up to the Brazilian national team. He is living the dream!
But just as it was looking like this guy could be on a roll to success, he stunts his exponential rise to success and stardom by ‘headbutting’ an opponent. Was it a menacingly-evil and deadly headbutt? No. He literally moved his head forward an inch. But nowadays, every player knows that constitutes a straight red card, so it was foolish on his part.
Anyhow, it is a lesson for the forward. This may even help prevent him from getting too carried away after such an impressive start to his Everton career.
Football boot of the week – Adidas X
These look absolutely beautiful, but that alone has not ensured the Adidas X football boots have made it as footy boot of the week. No, instead it was thanks to Lucas Moura, who obliterated United’s defence with his pace and scored twice in Spurs’ 3-0 victory at Old Trafford. He showed signs of his former self, following a disappointing season last year where he failed to impress as much as he did at PSG. Could this be the turning point?
