The Top 5 Best Shin pads for Football in 2024
5. Mitre Aircell Power Shin pads
4. G-Form S-Pro Shin pads
3. Northdeer Shin pads
2. Vizari Malaga Shin pads
1. Nike Mercurial Lite Shin pads
5. Mitre Aircell Power Shin pads
From the super stylish to the more, shall we say practical, but strikingly effective. These Mitre Aircell Power shin pads might not have the style or beauty of the Nike Lites, but let us tell you they are a super effective product on the pitch.
Features of the Mitre Aircell Power Shin pads
With several features helping them stand out in the market, the Mitre Aircell Power shin pads are truly exceptional models. Here are our favourite features.
Advanced Aircell Technology
While the Aircell technology may not do much for its looks (but as we mentioned before, nobody will see them and their pretty in a unique kind of way), it does wonders on the pitch. The Aircell technology provides added protection when the shin pads come into contact. It’s the first line of protection and boy is it a good, strong line. Think the 300 Romans facing Sparta. Big John the centre-back can come at you with all his little Spartans but they won’t break through. Aircell also keeps the leg cooler and allows for air to circulate through. This is great if, like me, you’re fed up of getting to the changing room after a game and your leg being wetter than Water World from sweat.
Dual Density Foam
Dual density foam, what is that? How can density be dual? Does it even matter? So many questions, and to be honest, we can’t delve deep into the science behind it all. What we can do is state what the dual density foam does. This is the part that absorbs the impact from any tackle, giving you absolute protection and the confidence to fly into challenges like an absolute mad man – Dier style.
Fixed-sock Ankle Protection
Finally, we had to mention the fixed-sock ankle protection. The soft, elastic material ensures these shin pads fit neatly around your ankle, and you won’t have to keep pulling them up. The ankle sock is also fairly substantial, giving you that added protection. So, if you’re someone with ankles the size of a small grape, these could be ideal for you.
Mitre Aircell Power Shin pad Customer Reviews – 4.5/5 (From 391)
Our high estimation of these shin pads is echoed by the good folks who have already bought them. Many people commented on their comfort and lock-in fit, thanks to the ankle collar. One reviewer also mentioned the Aircell technology and was seemingly surprised at how his son’s legs were not sweary post-game.
If there were any down points, a couple of users said that the elastic in the ankle sock became ineffective after a few wears. However, these were only isolated incidents and hundreds more commented that the ankle sock played an essential part in protecting the ankle and keeping the shin pad comfortably on the leg.
Final Verdict – Are the Mitre Aircell Power Shin pads Worth Buying?
Overall, we did really like the Mitre Aircell Power shin pads. Our favourite aspect of them was undoubtedly the Aircell technology, which allowed our leg to breathe and helped us to avoid excess sweat compiling (hope you’re not eating). Another great thing about these is that they are SATRA (an esteemed independent testing body) and CE (the government’s own testing certificate) tested and certified. This essentially means you’re getting a credible, quality product. So, overall, you can’t go wrong buying the Mitre Aircell Power Shin pads.
4. G-Form Pro-S Shin pads
G-what, G-Form? Sounds like a an early-2000s failed pop band. Well no, G-Form is an elite sportwear supplier that has developed one of the most unique and comprehensive models of shin pads. If you want something innovative, different but also at the very top of the market, these bad boys are calling your name. Here’s why we were so impressed with the Pro-S shin pads.
Features of the G-Form Pro-S Shin pads
The G-Form Pro-S shin pads are truly unique. They don’t have the typical Velcro straps, nor do they have an ankle sock. What?! So do they just float over the leg? How is this even possible?! Great question. They are basically a sleeve that you slip onto your leg. Find out more about how this works as we dissect the various different features of this model. Here are our favourites features.
Rubber Precision Technology
We were somewhat struggling on just where to start with these shin pads, but settled on what the kids are calling RPT (Rubber Precision Technology). The RPT used for these provides one of the best fits we’ve seen around the leg. The rubber material means they’re flexible, so it’s not actually as difficult as it may seem to put them on. They have the same consistency and feel undershorts, apart from the actual shin part.
Impact-Absorbing Pads
While the material is rubber and thin, the shin part of these is very sturdy. The pads on the front are bulky, but the rubber material ensures they don’t get in the way. They provide complete protection across a large section of your lower leg, and impact-absorbing pads so a job of tacking the proverbial wind out of any challenge you’re on the receiving end of.
UPF 50+ Compression Fabric
Wearing rubber tight to your legs will usually create a fair bit of swear. However, the UPF 50+ Compression Fabric helps in this instance to keep the leg dry. It also adds to the comfort of these shin pads. Where others on the list are lightweight are barely noticeable, you will feel these on your leg but they are super comfortable.
G-Form Pro-S Shin pad Customer Reviews – 4.5/5 (From 3,586)
The public has spoken! In general, most reviewers commented on the comfort, ease-of-fit and appearance. Another aspect that was focused on was how simple it is to clean them. Unlike other models, you can easily put these in the washing machine like they’re any other piece of clothing.
Final Verdict – Are the G-Form Pro-S Shin pads Worth Buying?
We’re not going to lie and pretend that the Pro-S shin pads are cheap, they’re not. But for around £75, you will get a top-class piece of kit that is truly revolutionary. If you play once a week for fun, we wouldn’t recommend these. However, if, like us, you immerse yourself in football and play a few times a week, it’s well worth investing in a pair of the Pro-S shin pads. They give you absolute protection while still being comfortable and not off-putting to your game.
We in particular loved how easy it is to wash them. So many times I’ve smelled something foul in my room and realised I’ve left my old shin pads out. These collect the sweat and are difficult to wash. However, the G-Form S-Pros can simply be put in the washing machine. Even if you forget to do that, the technology imbedded into them means sweat retention is minimal. I also personally loved how you don’t have to fiddle around with worn-off Velcro. Instead, they just slip straight onto your leg. This makes them ideal for players who hate having to continuously keep pulling up their shin pads, or use tape to keep them up.
All in all, these were really good shin pads and we loved the innovation behind them.
3. Northdeer Shin pads
The Northdeer shin pads are far from flashy or revolutionary, but that is fine because they do a fantastic job at protecting your shin. At a cheap price and with several great additions that make these a little more innovative that they may first seem, here is why the Northdeer shin pads made our of the best shipads for football.
Features of the Northdeer Shin pads
As we said, at first viewing, these seem simplistic. But often, companies try far to hard to produce something extravagant but they end up neglecting the very job they’re meant to do. These do not do that. Here are our favourite aspects of the Northdeer shin pads.
EVA Inner with Sweat Channels
Chaffing is a thing of the past with these Northdeer shin pads! With built-in sweat channels on the EVA inner, air is allowed to strategically through the shin pads to keep your legs ventilated and alleviate sweat.
Adjustable Loop
What’s unique about these shin pads is that they have an adjustable loop, the same way some shoes have buckles to clasp them tighter. This is a really cool idea as you can tighten or loosen the shin pads to your will. With that in mind, we were somewhat sceptical that they’d come loose while playing, but this wasn’t the case. The clasp remained buckled and tight at all times, giving enhanced fit and comfort. What’s more, you don’t have to worry about sizing. If they’re too fit you tighten them. Too loose, loosen them. Simple!
Ergonomic Design
The Northdeers have an ergonomic design, meaning the shin pads are concaved to fit around the curve of your leg. We absolutely loved this and wondered why more shin pads aren’t designed this way. A lot are, but many also have this more flat design that just doesn’t fit the leg anywhere near as well. Often, we see injuries to the side of the legs as well, where the shin pads don’t quite cover. With these, this is not an issue as they give a near-180-degree protection.
Northdeer Shin pad Customer Reviews – 4.6/5 (From 250)
Overall, the customers echoed our views of the Northdeer shin pads. Many commented how comfortable they were, while also mentioning that the fit was exceptional. Another plus that came from the reviews was that they were delivered very quickly – something key if you need some shin pads immediately for the weekend’s game.
In terms of negative reviews, there were just three 1-stars left, but none of them wrote anything on why they choose this. It must have been a competitor trying to quash the hype for these beauties!
Final Verdict – Are the Northdeer Shin pads Worth Buying?
Yes, the Northdeer shin pads are 100% worth buying. At around just £15, the price alone is all the reasons you need to purchase these. Add to that the fact that these are actually very good, effective shin pads, and you have a no-brainer purchase.
I especially loved the fact that although there were no visual bells or whistles, the thought and innovation behind these shin pads was clear to see. The concave shape was a particular personal highlight, as I felt a more comprehensive protection of the leg. It also meant the shin pads fit so well.
All in all, these are a high-quality buy at a very cheap price!
2. Vizari Malaga Football Shin pads
The Vizari Malaga shin pads may have an exotic name, but don’t be fooled, they will effectively protect your shins in even the most Brexit of nights on the pitch. We’re talking Stoke City away, rain, -5 degrees celcius with 11 angry bald-headed men looking to break your ankles at any chance kind of vibe. But here is why the Vixari Malaga shin pads made the list.
Features of the Vizari Malaga Shin pads
There are several great aspects to the Vizari Malaga shin pads, from the materials they’re made from to the comfort they provide. Here are the features we liked the most.
Polypropylene Shell
The Polypropylene (PP) shell provides stable protection while also being lightweight. This really is the best of both world, as you will get shielded from any incoming tackle from their oppo’s centre-back (probably named something like ‘chopper’ or ‘soul-catcher’). BUT, crucially they are also super light so you won’t feel them bogging you down do impairing your movement.
Foam-padded Interior
The foam-padded interior (or rather, the inner-side of the shin pad), provides ultimate comfort. It acts as a barrier from the harder PP exterior, keeping your legs both comfortable and protected. What’s more, the foam material is designed to evaporate sweat. This ensures the shin pads won’t slip down your legs – as you find with other, less advanced makes.
Ankle Sleeve
While some prefer the classic shin pad, ones with an ankle sleeve provide more support and comfort. The sleeve is made from elastic netting, to ensure the shin pad fits precisely around your legs. We found, however, this did not restrict blood flow or feel uncomfortably tight. Furthermore, the ankle sleeve provides ankle support. The ankle is a part of the leg that is specifically at risk in football, given its flimsiness compared to the stronger, more muscle parts of the upper leg.
Vizari Malaga Customer Reviews – 4.6/5 (From 11,420)
Overall, customer ratings for the Vizari Malagas were incredibly positive. From over 11,000 reviews, it drew an average rating of 4.6. Many of the positive reviews noted on the comfort and cheap price of these shin pads. Alternatively, some did have issues with sizing. We’d recommend buying a size up than the guide suggest, as many of the negative comments mentioned buying according to the size guide and them turning out too small.
Final Verdict – Are the Vizari Malaga Shin pads Worth Buying?
All in all, the Vizari Malaga shin pads are a great choice for you to buy. We in particular liked the lightweight feel and comfort they gave us while playing. It barely felt like anything was on my leg, and yet I felt sufficiently protected at the same time. Add that with the great price of under £16 and you get a really good product.
1. Nike Mercurial Lite Shin pads
More towards the upper-range of the market, the Nike Mercurial Lite shin pads are some of the best around. Here’s what we liked about them and why we think they’re a top buy.
Features of the Nike Mercurial Lite Shin pads
The Nike Lite shin pads are part of the prestigious ‘Mercurial’ brand, so it’s no wonder they have several great features on offer. Here are our favourites.
Eva Foam to Dissipate Impact
Our favourite feature is that beneath the propylene outer is a layer of Eva foam. This is our favourite feature of these shin pads, as they act as a buffer zone between opponents’ boots and your legs. Any impact taken from a challenge will be nullified thanks to the soft cushioned layer of the foam. It’s a great addition to the shin pads and one that makes them worthy of their price tag.
Propylene Coating for Added Protection
Our good old friend propylene is back, and as we know it provides exceptional protection for the shins. Its hard exterior doesn’t cause any detriment to the lightweight design, while still thoroughly protecting your lower legs on the field.
Optimised for Pace and Dynamism
These shin pads are lightweight, tipping the scales at just 300 grams. While it might not seem important, and even could be considered bad because light doesn’t equal sturdy, this is certainly not the case. The lightweight design allow for absolute, unrestricted movement while playing. So when you’re racing down the wing, you won’t feel some heavy shin pads digging into your leg.
Stylish Look
Okay, we get it. Nobody is going to see them anyway. But even so, we thought the look of the Nike Lite shin pads deserved a mention. If you’re into looking and feeling good on the pitch, these don’t have the typical ‘clunky’ look of a normal shin pad. Like Nike’s football boots, these look extra stylish. Irrelevant? Perhaps, but come on, they look good don’t they?
Nike Lite Customer Reviews – 4.6/5 (From 3,724)
Overall, the reviews for the Nike Lites talk for themselves. There was an overwhelming consensus that these are comfortable, effective shin pads. In particular, customers liked how easy they were to simply slide into the sock, plus how comfortable and well-fit they were once they were on.
Negative reviews largely centred around size issues – with a few claiming that they were too small. However, in terms of shin pads, too small will still be comfortable and effective. It just means you might have to buy a size up. Very few issues with shipping were encountered as well, but these were resolved and new pairs sent out quickly, so we saw no issues in recommending these as top buys.
Final Verdict – Are the Nike Lite Shin pads Worth Buying?
Absolutely! We loved the Nike Lite shin pads and definitely think they’re worth buying if you’re someone who plays football regularly, or if you play at a high level. The price is higher than other shin pads, but you’re getting real quality when you buy these. The Eva foam part of the shin pads was my personal favourite aspect of these. While it’s there to cushion any blows taken, I felt it also added a bit of comfort as well. Overall, these do more than a great job at protecting your legs and what’s more, you won’t notice them on your shins.
The Best Shin pads for Football
The best shin pads for football are the Nike Mercurial Lite Shin pads.In our opinion, the Nike Mercurial Lite shin pads take the biscuit for the best shin pads on the market. They’re simplistic in look, while still having a stylish appearance. A personal choice of mine is to go for shin pads that don’t have the ankle sock, so these slip-on ones were ideal for me. The Eva foam interior in particular added to the comfort and protection, and overall we found these shin pads were ideal for those who play on a regular basis – making them our top pick.
The Cheapest Shin pads for Football
The cheapest shin pads for football are the Tainrunse Shin pads. These will set you back less than £1 (though you’ll have to ‘fork’ out around £2 for delivery depending on where you’re from) if you want to find a cheap pair of football shin pads. In terms of features, there’s not much to go on. They’re literally just plastic material in an ergonomic design. While they’re very basic, they are legal to wear for football and will offer you protection. So, if you’re on a budget, these Tainrunse shin pads are the choice for you.
The Smallest Shin pads for Football
The smallest shin pads for football are the Wondesa Shin pads.
You won’t find any shin pads smaller than the Wondesa – and given their size, it was pretty hard to find these as it was. They are legal for football and you are allowed to wear them according to the game’s governing rules. Needless to say, these are lightweight, but their contoured design also makes them anti-slip, so they will stay in place on the pitch. The interior is made from plastic but improves foam for a comfort effect. While we can’t say these Wondesa shin pads are the best for protection, they are comfortable and if you’re not a fan of shin pads, these do a great job of being completely unintrusive and barely detectable, while still effectively constituting shin pads. So, the ref has no leg to stand on in terms of telling you to put on some ‘proper’ shin pads. What’s more, these are super cheap at around £7 AND you get two pairs!
Do Shin pads Make a Difference?
In terms of protection, yes, shin pads definitely do make a difference. Collisions and heavy tackles are part of the game, so shin pads provide vital protection to your legs that can prevent serious injuries like leg or ankle breaks. In terms of affecting performance, a good pair of well-made shin pads should not impair your performance.
Can you Wear Mini Shin pads in Football?
Yes, you are allowed to wear mini shin pads in football. The FA states that your shin pads must provide reasonable protection, but an actual minimum size is not stated. We’ve seen many footballers, both pro and amateur, wear mini shin pads in football. So, while it’s not recommended as it doesn’t provide as sufficient protection, you are allowed to wear them.
Do You Have to Wear Shin pads in 5-a-Side?
While there’s no specific law for 5-a-side football, it’s recommended that you do wear shin pads for your own protection. Depending on the league, tournament or venue you’re playing in, it might be regulation that all players wear shin pads.
What Happens if You Don’t Wear Shin pads in Football?
Not wearing shin pads in football will increase the risk of collision-made injuries. If you don’t wear shin pads, the referee is entitled to make you leave the pitch until you wear a pair.
Do Professional Footballers Wear Shin pads?
Yes, pro footballers do wear shin pads. They are required to wear shin pads in any official game, but even if they weren’t, many clubs would enforce it for their own protection.
Does Jack Grealish Wear Shin pads?
Yes, Jack Grealish does wear shin pads, as he is obligated to do so and must abide by all FA rules. However, he wears mini shin pads and is famed for wearing these along with wearing his socks abnormally low down his legs.
Are shin pads the same as shin guards?
Yes, shin pads and shin guards are the same thing. Footballers and shops tend to call them shin pads but if you see them being referred to as shin guards don’t worry there’s absolutely no difference between the two.
