Adidas Glitch Football Boots: The good the bad and the ugly

The Adidas Glitch football boots truly are the most mysterious product on the market. The German brand has been intentionally coy and vague about the Glitch boots, which were released on a very small scale towards the end of last year. In South Park, Cartman buys himself a Theme Park but specifically prohibits anyone else bar him from visiting, which in turn generated even more popularity. It seems Adidas are on a similar wavelength with the ‘less is more’ approach, but despite not giving us much, we will answer all of those unanswered questions you have on the remarkable Adidas Glitch boots.

How can I get a pair of Adidas’ Glitch footy boots?

Currently, the Glitches aren’t too difficult to get. When they first came out, players who had the Glitches would also get codes which could be passed on to others so that they could use the code to purchase their own pair. But now they are far less exclusive. All you have to do is download the Adidas Glitch app from the App Store and request a code from Adidas. However, they are still not available on Adidas’ website or in any high street shops.

Where were the Glitch football boots originally released?

London was the first, and at the time only, place the Adidas’ Glitch football boots were released as it was the “most relevant football city.” The launch was an invite-only affair, with the idea that those attending would be the first to get the boots, but also perhaps more significantly, they would also receive a number of codes that they could pass on to friends so that more people could wear the Glitches.

How much do the Glitches cost?

Contrary to what some had once thought, the code simply gives you the opportunity to buy the boot. So those who received codes during the early release of the boot did not get them for free and they had to pay the same price as people do today. With demand still high, they are retailing at £250, but with the innovation and unique concept to the brand, this is justified.

Which players wear the boots?

Ruben Loftus-Cheek is surprisingly the highest profile footballer to wear the elusive Glitches. The Three Stripes has intentionally not laced up the likes of Gareth Bale and Mesut Ozil to keep that air of mystery with the brand and to prevent it from going mainstream. Apart from the England international, the closest the boots have got to breaking out on the biggest footballing stage is by being seen worn by youth players of certain London clubs.

Can anyone get the Glitch football boots?

You must be in the U.K to get a pair of these footy boots. Initially, Adidas made them available to just those in London, but now the spectrum has been broadened and it’s expected that a worldwide release (maybe not all in one go but perhaps a city at a time) is imminent.

Do you have to play football at a certain standard to get the Glitches?

No. As long as you have £250 at your disposal then it doesn’t matter what you buy them for, how often you use them or what standard of footballer you are.

Why are these football boots so unique?

It’s the first proper boot on the market (although predecessors have tried and failed to offer what the Glitches do) to allow for player customisation. The boot itself comes as just the core, with the soulplate and heel shape as all one part. The second part of the boot, the upper skin, is separate and must be added onto the core part of the Glitches. So, in having a removable upper, you as the player can choose which colour boots you want to play in and change mid-match if you wanted to.

What do you get for the £250?

As well as a quality, technologically-advanced boot, a Glitch purchase comes with more than just that. You will get an Adidas Glitch drawstring bag, two outer skins of your choice for the boots as well as the boot itself. Any purchase comes with next-day delivery courtesy of Adidas’ very own courier (when the Glitches were exclusively available in London, a four hour delivery time was in place).

What’s in store for the future?

Adidas themselves has said that the Glitch football boots will be made available outside of the U.K in the future. Where that next city or country is, is as of yet unknown, but the German company is keen to let the natural economic forces of supply and demand play out. They want to see the areas in which young people are responding to the Glitches the best and let the trend organically migrate there before establishing the brand officially.

As for whether we will see the Glitches on our T.V screen every week, we will say it is unlikely. Adidas are clearly focusing on a certain brand image, and in breaking that and making the Glitches go mainstream, it undermines all the work they have done to try to keep them exclusive and desirable.
