Ultimate guide to watching football on TV this Christmas

how-to-watch-football-on-tv-over-christmas

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! That has never been truer than when the festive fixtures pile up on TV. If you’re wondering just how you can watch all the football games, we’ve got you covered.

It’s that time of year when you have no idea what day or time it is. You’ve eaten yourself to death over and over again. You don’t remember your last non-alcoholic drink. Everyone is either eating, drinking or sleeping. It’s simply the greatest.

Add to that a Premier League fixture list as long as your arm and it’s pretty much utopia. Below we’re going to give you the low-down on where you can watch the games and how to fit as many as possible into each day!

The only bad news is the number of subscriptions you’re going to need! BT Sport, Sky and Amazon are all showing games.

How to get BT Sport

You can get BT Sport if you have internet provided by BT. This is one of the cheaper options and can range between £5 and £15. You also get Freeview and AMC with this subscription. You can get BT Sport on Sky TV for around £30 a month.

BT Sport has about 12 games over the festive period. This includes all the New Year’s Day fixtures. So you can either settle on the sofa with games at 12:30, 17:30 and 20:00. Or be a total lunatic and grab a bit of hair of the dog at the pub.

How to get Amazon Prime

Luckily Amazon Prime is probably the easiest service to sign up to. If you have an Amazon account and haven’t already had a 30-day free trial of Prime you can sign up and get all the games.

If you haven’t got an account simply make one and choose to sign up for a 30-day free trial. Just remember you can always make another email and sign up for a free trial. Just call us MoneySavingExpert… Martin Lewis who?

When you sign up for Prime you have to add bank details that will be charged after the free month so don’t forget to cancel if you don’t want to stay signed up! Amazon has got all the games for Boxing Day and the 27th and you can stream Amazon Prime video on any mobile device or smart TV.

How to get Sky TV

Sky TV is by far the most expensive of all. But you do get the most and probably the best channels. They also have the majority of the games all year round. We can’t tell you exactly how much it’ll cost as there are so many different packages.

If you don’t want to fork out for Sky, consider a NowTV pass necessary for the festive period. You can pay for 1 month of Sky Sports and watch all the games on there. You’ll defo get your money’s worth with all the fixtures on Sky during the festive period but also those outside the 2 week period were talking about here.

Where to watch football at Christmas?

We are classing the 21st December as the start of the festive period. It should be the start of a Christmas week off for anyone lucky enough.

Football on Saturday 21st December

The bad news is that as its Saturday the 3pm kick-offs will not be shown. The good news is we’ve got some pretty decent games for you to settle into.

The early kick-off is Everton v Arsenal at 12:30pm on BT Sport.

Two title-chasers Man City v Leicester are on at 5:30pm on Sky Sports.

Football on Sunday 22nd December

A decent Sunday with 2 games on TV, both Sky Sports.

We have Watford v Man United at 2:00pm on Sky Sports.

A London Derby and Chelsea facing their old boss with Tottenham v Chelsea at 4.30pm on Sky Sports.

Football on Thursday 26th December

The big one. Boxing Day. I sometimes feel sorry for players playing on Boxing Day. No matter how much they’re paid they’re still humans who have families. Actually, for the amount they’re paid, I’d sacrifice the sausage rolls and wines on Christmas day to play 90 minutes of football on Boxing Day!

Where to watch the Boxing Day football

You’re not going to want to miss the set up on Amazon Prime today. In their deal they have managed to secure all the fixtures on Boxing Day. This means you can watch any game you want on Prime.

Wake up slightly late and get yourself a coffee and a turkey leftovers omelette. Because it’s going to be a fantastic day.

Kick-off your day with Tottenham v Brighton at 12.30pm.

Then at 3.00pm we have an array of games listed below. You’ll be able to flick through all of these games to catch all the action you can handle! As long as you aren’t being forced into playing games with the in-laws that you secretly hate!

If you’re the kind of person who just wants to see goals (isn’t that what we all want to see) then you can watch the goals show on Prime which shows the goals from each game as they go in.

3.00pm kick-offs on Boxing Day:

Bournemouth v Arsenal

Aston Villa v Norwich

Chelsea v Southampton

Crystal Palace v West Ham

Everton v Burnley

Sheffield United v Watford

Just as the pensioners begin to fall asleep the next game gets underway. Man United v Newcastle starts at 5.30pm.

Just to top the day off we have one more game to finish. We predict you’ll just be starting to feel hungry. Well not really hungry but the post dinner snacks will definitely be out. And you will definitely be eating them!

Another festive top of the table clash sees Leicester v Liverpool at 8.00pm. So there we have Boxing Day. 6 whole hours of pure football. Including the ability to watch which ever game you want. What more could you ask for?

Football on Friday 27th December

A bit of a let-down after the carnage of Boxing Day but we do get Wolves v Manchester City at 7.45pm. The game is on Amazon Prime and as it’s technically a workday it’s an evening kick-off. You’ll have to busy yourself with some chores during the day if you aren’t working. I’m sure the little ones with have made enough of a mess for you to clear up. Or if you are a little one you must have a new toy to play with during the day!

Football on Saturday 28th December

If you did finish work on the 21st you’ve probably lost track of the days by now. It’s a Saturday and what a great Saturday for Non-League footballers. Lots of them play Boxing Day and New Year’s Day on wages that don’t quite compare with those professionals. Luckily most of them won’t have a game this Saturday and can go to a game or catch some on TV.

We’re being treated to 3 games in a day again. Beautiful.

We’ve got a coastal battle with Brighton v Bournemouth at 12.30pm on Sky Sports. We then have the 3.00pm kick-offs which can’t be shown on TV. But pop Soccer Saturday on and watch all your bets go down the drain.

It’s a strong evening of football with 2 games for you to devour. The only real decision is whether you do it alongside a takeaway or some Xmas leftovers.

Norwich v Tottenham at 5.30pm on Sky Sports and flick over to BT Sport at 7.45pm for Burnley v Man United.

Football on Sunday 29th December

A couple of great games on the Sunday! A big London derby Arsenal v Chelsea at 2.00pm on Sky Sports. Can Chelsea’s young team continue their recent dominance over Arsenal?

Liverpool v Wolves follows at 4.30pm on Sky Sports. Wonder if Liverpool will have wrapped up the title by now? Or is this the time of year their season starts to crumble?

Football on Wednesday 1st January

It’s New Year’s Day and you’ve just rolled out of bed. You stand up and wonder… Who’s room is this? Did I pull last night? Then you realise you’ve crawled into bed with your mum and dad in the night. Awkward.

You slink downstairs utterly embarrassed and head ringing. As the kettle boils a thought hits you. FOOOOOTBALL. And what a day of football it is!

Where to watch the football on New Year’s Day?

The day kicks off early considering the antics of the previous night. Pop yourself on the sofa with a bacon sarnie and cuppa for a choice of 2 early games.

You can choose between Brighton v Chelsea or Burnley v Aston Villa. Both are on at 12.30pm on BT Sport.

At 3.00pm there’s 3 games to choose from all on BT Sport and listed below.

Newcastle v Leicester

Southampton v Tottenham

Watford v Wolves

Another 3 games brought to us by BT Sport kick-off at 5.30pm.

Manchester City v Everton

Norwich v Crystal Palace

West Ham v Bournemouth

The final New Year’s Day fixture is a biggie. The two teams who used to rule the roost in the Premier League battle it out. Arsenal v Manchester United is at 8:00pm on BT Sport. Which of these 2 struggling teams will take all 3 points? You might be struggling to stay awake but you’ll definitely want to for this game!

Football on Thursday 2nd January

The festive period comes to an end with a bit of a whimper to be honest. It’s an evening kick-off as it’s technically a workday.

Just the one game. Liverpool v Sheffield United is on at 8:00pm on BT Sport.

So there you have it. Your guide to all the festive football 2019. The possibilities are endless! So start putting in some groundwork with the Mrs, now. You’re going to need all the goodwill you can get considering the amount of football on this Christmas!
