‘A Sondico football boots review? Aren’t Sondico that brand that does those footballs that nobody likes to play with?’ Well yes, you’re right disgruntled anonymous reader. Sondico is not the most well known of brands, and what it is know for is basically producing football that teams buy when they’ve spent their entire budget on a kit that doesn’t fit. But they’ve also released their own football boots.

So, are they worth buying? Here is our honest and thorough review of the Sondico football boots.

What is Sondico?

Sondico is a football equipment, clothing and footwear brand that is part of the publicly traded company Frasers Group plc. It was established in 1982 by none other than Newcastle’s favourite businessman Mike Ashley, and has since developed brands such as Everlast, Slazenger and, of course, Sports Direct. But enough about the boring context, let’s delve into the Sondico football boots.

Appearance – 5/10

Okay, okay, looks aren’t everything. At least that’s what I tell myself ever since my ex-wife left me. But while the likes of Nike and Adidas have released things of absolute beauty like the Adidas Predator 18.1s, Sondico have given us these, erm, nice-looking boots.

Joking aside, these aren’t much to look at. They remind us of the Umbro Speciali Eternals,  or the Adidas Copa Mundials, with the black and white colourway. But somehow, they don’t quite pull of the simplistic-yet-elegant look. They come across simply just a bit plain and unattractive.

However, a lot of old-schoolers much prefer this basic look of boots. We’ve all heard the old guy in the pub chastise the flamboyant colours of boots nowadays. If you’re a defender in particular, these Sondicos are pretty suited to a hard-tackling, no-nonsense player. They definitely fit into the ‘Brexit boots’ category. What’s more, the look of boots is largely insignificant compared to how they perform on the pitch. Plus, you won’t be targeted out by the oppos 7ft7 bodybuilder at the back, whose biggest hatred in life apart from his wife are opponents who wear pink boots and think they’re Jude Bellingham.

Features – 8/10

We criticised the simplicity of these Sondicos in the previous section, but that is something that’s actually going for it in terms of performance and features of the boots.

  • Thick and accessible laces
  • Padded ankle collar
  • Solid soleplate
  • Synthetic upper

We found it incredibly refreshing to wear such a simple boot. Nowadays, ankle collars, uniquely shaped lacing and extra-optimised uppers are the norm. So, it was a really cool experience to actually go back to basics and just wear a solid football boot that didn’t have all the bells and whistles (we mean this in a good way).

Thick and Accessible Laces

An example of this are the thick and accessible laces. All too often, we go to tie our fancy boots now and the laces are thin, frayed and difficult to even access behind the tongue or being situated at the side of the boots. The Sondicos have thick laces that are in the middle of the boots. It’s the simple things in life, but it made a difference to trying to find and then tie minute, half-broken laces.

Padded Ankle Collar

Okay, let’s get a little more scientific now. The Sondicos also have a padded ankle collar. Don’t get us wrong, it’s not a Nike boots collar – like the high-collared Nike Hypervenom Phantom IIs. But again, that’s what we liked about it. It wasn’t fancy, but you could really feel the padding. This gives you the confidence that your foot is properly supported from the back, without constricting movement. It’s the type of boots we could see being used for rugby, where driving from the back foot is common.

Solid Soleplate

Another feature we liked, for many similar reasons, was the solid soleplate. Again, a lot of modern boots concentrate too much on being lightweight and enhanced for control and dribbling. They neglect the robust aspect that’s also needed. These Sondicos definitely don’t have that problem. The defined soleplate help to add real stability to the foot. In fact, we’d go as far as to say these are the most robust and sturdy boots you can buy. So, if you’re tired of constantly buying new boots or see your boots often break, these could be a good replacement.

Synthetic Upper

Finally, the synthetic upper is a thing of beauty. You can see the craftmanship, with the boots having tonal stitching. This not only makes them feel smoother than my naughty little shapes on the dancefloor, but it also makes these boots more comfortable. So, for those of you who have fit problems and want to make your football boots more comfortable, again, these Sondicos could be your solution.

Comfort – 7/10

The comfort of the Sondico football boots is very good. At first, we felt a bit of rub from the heel. Unlike some other boots, they aren’t as malleable and won’t as easily mould to your foot. However, if you buy the correct size boot, these will be ideal for comfort.

It’s the padded ankle and solid soleplate that add sturdiness, but also mean they aren’t as mouldable. So, if your foot fits the boots first time you’ll be sorted. That’s why, though, we couldn’t rate these higher in terms of comfort, as if your feet are more uniquely shaped or the size doesn’t fit your foot, these could be a bit more uncomfortable. Check out our easy guide if you’re not sure how tight your football boots should be.

Value for money 9/10

We had to give the Sondicos a high score for value for money, simply because they’re so cheap! For less than £30, you can visit Amazon and have a brand-new pair of men’s football boots delivered straight to your door. Click here to check the current low price on Amazon.

That is UNHEARD OF in this day and age, where the best football boots, like the Nike Phantom Venom Elites, are sometimes in excess of £100. Sure, you pay a lot for a good quality, effective boot, but it is nice to see these Sondicos are comfortable, sturdy and can do a job on the pitch without sending your bank balance into the red.

Amazon User Reviews of the Sondico Football Boots – 9/10 (177 reviews)

Most Amazon reviews echoed what we said, emphasising how comfortable and cheap these boots are. In general, most feedback was positive (hence the 4.3 average), however, one negative that cropped up a couple of times were the studs. A few people commented that they fell out of the boots when wearing for the first time. This is perhaps more down to user error, as opposed to a failure of the boots. So, we’d suggest tightening the studs before the first wear – as you should with any other boots anyway.

Sondico Football Boots Final Verdict – Are They Worth it?

Overall it’s a categoric YES, these Sondico football boots are definitely worth buying. While they aren’t the most advanced or best looking, they certainly do a great job on the pitch. I personally love having these as a second pair of boots. If I’m playing on a heavy, muddy pitch, I’ll whip these on and feel like I’m running in a field of daisies, rather than slipping around on ice skates.

Their durability and comfort is also a huge plus, and worth taking into consideration when deciding whether or not to buy these. They could easily last you three seasons, while other boots typically last just one.

The price is the last point we must mention again. I loved the fact that you can still get a pair of quality boots for such a cheap price. If you’re on a tight budget but still want effective football boots, these are a clear choice.
